Sustainable Events

By hosting sustainability related events throughout the year, the GSA’s Sustainability Events Committee aims to create awareness of economic, ecological, and social sustainability both within and outside of the Geography Department.

In the recent past, the GSA has put on such sustainability related events as the Sustainability in Action! Series, sponsored by AMS Sustainability, which was directed at creating dialogue and awareness about local and global sustainability issues. The series was also an opportunity for students to learn more about how to apply their undergraduate degrees. Past presentations include: a debate on the sustainability of corporations with Andrew Telfer (Manager, Sustainability Walmart Canada); a tour of the CIRS building given by John Robinson (Executive Director of the USI, Geography professor, IRES professor); and a talk on social sustainability by Mario Lee and Ali Grant (City of Vancouver).

In addition to hosting its own events, the Sustainability Events Committee also collaborates with other UBC sustainability groups such as the UBC Sustainability Initiative (USI) and AMS Sustainability to create a stronger sense of campus-wide unity.
